Anomalies in Instanton Calculus

چکیده

I develop a formalism for solving topological field theories explicitly, in the case when the explicit expression of the instantons is known. I solve topological Yang-Mills theory with the k = 1 Belavin et al. instanton and topological gravity with the Eguchi-Hanson instanton. It turns out that naively empty theories are indeed nontrivial. Many unexpected interesting hidden quantities (punctures, contact terms, nonperturbative anomalies with or without gravity) are revealed. Topological Yang-Mills theory with G = SU(2) is not just Donaldson theory, but contains a certain link theory. Indeed, local and nonlocal observables have the property ofmarking cycles. Moreover, from topological gravity one learns that an object can be considered BRST exact only if it is so all over the moduli space M, boundary included. Being BRST exact in any interior point of M is not sufficient to make an amplitude vanish. Presumably, recursion relations and hierarchies can be found to solve topological field theories in four dimensions, in particular topological Yang-Mills theory with G = SU(2) on R and topological gravity with the full set of asymptotically locally Euclidean manifolds.

The ADHM Construction and Anselmi’s Topological Anomalies

We examine the anomalies arising in instanton calculus as detailed by Damiano Anslemi in 1994. Whereas Anselmi uses BRST theory, we use the ADHM construction to arrive at the same conclusions from a differentialgeometric way. We observe that Anselmi’s TQFT is similar to Donaldson Theory applied to charge 1 instantons on the 4-sphere,although the latter is really only used for 4-manifolds with b...

Global Gravitational Anomalies

A general formula for global gauge and gravitational anomalies is derived. It is used to show that the anomaly free supergravity and superstring theories in ten dimensions are all free of global anomalies that might have ruined their consistency. However, it is shown that global anomalies lead to some restrictions on allowed compactifϊcations of these theories. For example, in the case of O(32)...

Instanton calculus for the self-avoiding manifold model

We compute the normalisation factor for the large order asymptotics of perturbation theory for the self-avoiding manifold (SAM) model describing flexible tethered (D-dimensional) membranes in d-dimensional space, and the ǫ-expansion for this problem. For that purpose, we develop the methods inspired from instanton calculus, that we introduced in a previous publication (Nucl. Phys. B 534 (1998) ...

Instanton Calculus With R-R Background And Topological Strings

The non-perturbative low energy effective action of N=2 SYM is studied within a microscopic string realization via D3/D-instanton systems. The localization deformation of instanton moduli space which has allowed the exact computation of multi-instanton contributions is, in this setting, due to a RR graviphoton background. The relation of deformed instanton contributions to topological string am...

Low Energy Effective Action in N = 2 Yang - Mills as an Integrated Anomaly

Based on chiral ring relations and anomalies, as described by Cachazo, Douglas, Seiberg and Witten, we argue that the holomorphic effective action in N=2 Yang-Mills theory can be understood as an integrated U(1) anomaly from a purely field theory point of view. In particular, we show that the periods of the Riemann surface arising from the generalized Konishi anomaly can be given a physical int...
